NATFHE organised a ballot following a failure by the colleges to honour agreements made as far back as 2001 to bring lecturers pay up to the same level as that for schoolteachers. A massive 78% of NATFHE members, who took part in the ballot, voted in favour of strike action and 89% voted in favour of actions short of strike. Three one-day strikes have been planned along with other continuous disruptive action which will hit the working of colleges. Press release Notice of industrial action to CEF Notice of industrial action to principals Strike ballot opens at sixteen collegesLecturers in Northern Ireland’s sixteen further education colleges are being balloted on industrial action for the second time in just over a year. Lecturers are angry over the failure of the colleges to honour promises to raise their pay to the level of schoolteachers in Northern Ireland. In 2001, and again in 2004, the employers (College Employers Forum) agreed to put in place pay arrangements for an upper pay spine similar to that awarded to schoolteachers but these have never been implemented. The report by David Kissman Associates was commissioned by The Department for Employment and Learning and was published in February 2006.
