NATFHE in Further Education

Further Education Review

SIGNIFICANT IMPLICATIONS FOR YOU AND YOUR COLLEGE

The Department for Education and Skills’ Five Year Strategy for Children and Learners has significant implications for the future role and status of the further education college sector. Sir Andrew Foster has been asked, by the Secretary of State for Education and Skills, and the Chair of the Learning and Skills Council for England, to carry out a review of the future role of the FE college sector. NATFHE general secretary Paul Mackney has been appointed to the external reference group which is advising on arrangements for gathering evidence and engaging people in the process and will comment on emerging evidence and conclusions.

THEY WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU

Find out all about the review on the special website (see links below). Sir Andrew plans to carry out the review in an open and consultative way. There‘s a questionnaire you can complete and there will be a number of informal networks covering a range of stakeholders and areas covered by the review.

If you have a particular area of interest, and would like to get involved, then you can either fill in the online questionnaire or contact the review team at the address given here.

NATFHE members might want to consider the issues below when responding. You don’t need to deal with everything when putting in your views.
  1. What are further education’s main purposes?
  2. What barriers exist to advancing these?
  3. Is the student mix and course mix about right in your college?
  4. What are you most proud of about your college and your job?
  5. What helps you do a good job and what makes it difficult?
  6. Do you have enough opportunity for professional development? If not why not?
  7. Is your workload manageable and what about the balance between admin, teaching and leadership/management responsibilities?
  8. What’s been happening to staff morale in the last 15 years or so?
  9. How does the school/college pay gap affect you and your college?
  10. What do you think about the plan to raise your normal pension age from 60-65?
  11. What would improve management in your college?
  12. Is the inspection regime a help or a hindrance?
