NATFHE strike action on 7 March stops all teaching in post-1992 sectorIn a massive show of strength NATFHE members in each post-1992 institution have successfully closed down their institutions today. Reports on the effectiveness of the one-day strike suggest that virtually no teaching at all is took place with many institutions closed for the day. NATFHE members have sent UCEA a clear message to tell the truth about academic pay and make a fair pay offer before further action closes down the sector once again. From 8 March members start their action short of a strike which will be equally as strong and equally as effective.The reports sent by our branches on their strike action are as follows: - Anglia Ruskin University NATFHE - organised strong pickets at all sites with no classes taught today
- Bath Spa University NATFHE - report large pickets with no signs of teaching taking place.
- Bishop Grosseteste College NATFHE - Report pickets on all entrances no sign of teaching taking place
- Bournemouth University - NATFHE organised effective picketing and report that no teaching appears to be taking place
- Buckinghamshire Chilterns University College - effective picketing on all entrances no sign of any teaching taking place
- University Of Cambridge Faculty of Education - A joint NATFHE/AUT picket was in place from 8.00am-2pm outside the University of Cambridge faculty of education. no teaching took place in the main faculty building and almost none in the adjacent building which the faculty also uses.
- Canterbury Christ Church University College NATFHE - Had up to 45 pickets on the gates and teaching was severely disrupted the vast majority cancelled altogether. At 12.30, with the AUT from Kent University we led a successful demonstration of over a hundred people through the town, many wearing academic robes. The demonstration ended with a rally In the SU Building. Student support was fantastic! We had lots of media coverage. Including local TV and Radio Stations, and all the SE Kent newspapers
- Coventry University NATFHE report that there is extensive disruption of teaching at coventry university with strong pickets and good local press coverage.
- Cumbria Institute of Arts NATFHE - Very solid. over half the branch was on picket. It was their first time to ever participate in a strike.
- Dartington College of Arts NATFHE - report that dartington branch gained new members further strengthening our majority of over 75% salaried and part-time academic staff now represented by natfhe at dartington. Over 350 signatures so far received for the petition. We joined together with the dca student union in the student bar for an open dialogue on the action, which included a discussion of the wider picture and the importance of trade unions and student unions in today's world. We only had two lecturers come into college to run sessions. UNISON colleagues and other support staff came out to join us on breaks and brought us brownies, biscuits, tea, umbrellas and good company.
- De Montfort University NATFHE - virtually all entrances were picketed from 8 in the morning until 5 in the afternoon, with about 800 rain-soaked signatures collected from students, support staff and members of the public supporting our claim for fair pay.
- Edgehill College NATFHE - very good picket, well attended great support from staff and students throughout the day.
- University College Falmouth NATFHE- We did really well, good picket lines and lots of help from students, could not see any teaching takingplace.
- Homerton College NATFHE - Liaised with AUT Cambridge - Picketing Education Faculty
- University College For The Creative Arts NATFHE - Farnham campus: NATFHE have good pickets and support from students and support staff. Maidstone campus: a very successful picket with about 20 people got the branch revitalised and having a meeting next week to elect reps.
- Kingston University NATFHE - organised a successful lively picket and report that they can see no signs of teaching taking place.
- Leeds Metropolitan University - NATFHE organised good pickets at all entrances and report that classes have been cancelled.
- Liverpool Hope University College - NATFHE organised Effective Pickets and Report That No Teaching Is Taking Place.
- Liverpool John Moores University - NATFHE turned out more than 90 pickets with more members joining a march and rally.
- London Metropolitan University - NATFHE picketed all entrances and report that no teaching is taking place.
- London South Bank University - NATFHE have 30 pickets covering all entrances, no teaching appears to be taking place today.
- Manchester Metropolitan University - NATFHE organised pickets at all entrances, over 100 members took part in the march and rally through the city.
- Middlesex University - NATFHE report that Hendon site -pickets on both entrances, support from the small AUT association at the site with some on the picket line and support from students. further reports indicate hardly any teaching taking place. Pickets at Cat Hill and Enfield also.
- Newman College of Higher Education - NATFHE have at least 10 pickets on each gate, keeping warm around a brazier, no classes are taking place today, good support from staff and students. Local TV, radio and press have visited the picket lines.
- North East Wales Institute of HE - NATFHE organised strong pickets at all five entrances to main campus. All classes were cancelled. Deductions are going to student hardship fund - about 10k. Plenty of local media attention. Contacts with any media - BBC Wales TV crew interviewed 4 members (1 in Welsh); MFM interviewed 3 in English, 1 in Welsh. Local papers took photos & interviewed branch chair (article appeared in Wrexham leader in evening with photo on page 5); Wrexham mail weekly paper due out on Friday. Colleagues from Deeside & the Welsh College Of Horticulture plus reps from amicus, the GMB & UNISON joined us at the lunchtime rally.
- Norwich School Of Art/Design NATFHE- good turn out - local paper took photos. Picketed main entrance in city centre. Got good support. About 30 branch members took part.
- Nottingham Trent University NATFHE - excellent support at nottingham trent with around 110-120 pickets- all significant entrances well picketed and virtually no classes taking place at any site. we knew that the strike would be very well supported by students at two city buildings. but the day exceeded our most optimistic forecasts. good turnout at the lobby of governors yesterday evening.
- Oxford Brookes University NATFHE - report a good picket on all entrances with support from unison students and the public.
- Rose Bruford College NATFHE - collected lots of signatures - hardly any activity at the college. 3 local newspapers taken photos. 13 members from our small college took part in the pickets.
- Sheffield Hallam University NATFHE - organised effective picketing of all sites. Very little activity reported within the institution, local radio interviews carried out.
- Southampton Solent University NATFHE - have 60 pickets covering all entrances and report the university is 'pretty well closed', no signs of teaching taking place today.
- St Martins College NATFHE - report that the college is closed for the day.
- St Mary's University College NATFHE - report that all entrances were picketed from early morning. in both cases the picket lines were very successful - there was no teaching on site. picket lines were maintained for most of the day despite atrocious weather conditions. Some NATFHE members joined in with Queens AUT and marched to the department's headquarters (150 -200 in total).
- St. Mary's College NATFHE - pickets covered three entrances on a rota system. Very little activity at the institution.
- Staffordshire University NATFHE - have pickets at both sites in Stoke and Stafford attracting large amounts of public support. All lecturers are cancelled today.
- Stranmillis University College NATFHE - entrances were picketed from early morning. The picket lines were very successful - there was no teaching on campus picket lines were maintained for most of the day despite atrocious weather conditions. Some NATFHE members joined in with Queens AUT and marched to the department's headquarters (150 -200 in total).
- Swansea Institute Of Higher Education NATFHE- report approximately 6/8 pickets on each entrance/site. no teaching on any site. Radio Wales interviewed NATFHE regional official outside swansea university. Vibe FM did telephone interview with NATFHE regional support official.
- Thames Valley University NATFHE - have pickets at all sites. Carried out interviews with local radio and local weekly paper. BBC South due to visit this afternoon. Good pickets at Ealing.
- Trinity College Carmarthen NATFHE - Good pickets. Contact with BBC Radio Wales.
- Leeds Trinity/All Saints College NATFHE - organised good pickets with all classes cancelled.
- University College Chichester NATFHE - have both sites well covered about 20 pickets each. no teaching at Bognor or Chichester.
- University College Northampton NATFHE - report large numbers of pickets on all entrances, great atmosphere. In terms of academic activity the place is closed for the day. Pickets wet and cold but pleased with the impact of the strike.
- University Of Wales Newport NATHFE - 35 pickets out over both sites, including students on picket line and subsequent messages of support. We believe little or no teaching took place pickets were interviewed by South Wales Argus.
- University College Winchester NATFHE - report effective picketing throughout the day despite the weather. No teaching taking place.
- University Of Brighton NATFHE - have shut 2 of the three sites with very little activity detected on the remaining campus - very large pickets on all entrances. Liaising with AUT and at Sussex. Afternoon rally at grand parade.
- University Of Central Lancashire NATFHE - report 60 NATFHE pickets on all entrances to the main campus. Minister of state for higher education Bill Rammell visited the institution and was given a rousing welcome and advised to settle the dispute as soon as possible. No teaching appears to be taking place today.
- University Of Derby NATFHE - report effective picketing with good numbers on entrances.
- University Of East London NATFHE - Docklands: excellent picket about 30 members. Solid picket line, virtually no students going in and one senior academic has slipped through the picket. VC came out and spoke with us.
- University Of Glamorgan NATFHE- report approximately 50 pickets throughout the day and covered all entrances to the university. (including health educators at glyntaf). We believe little or no teaching took place.
- University Of Gloucestershire NATFHE - report a good turn out of members for picket duty and good local press coverage
- University Of Greenwich NATFHE - have all sites covered. 26 pickets out at Greenwich maritime. Avery hill campus appears completely shut down. Interviews given yesterday and today to local media. Good support from younger members.
- University Of Hertfordshire - NATFHE have strong pickets on all sites many non-members refusing to cross the picket line.
- University Of Huddersfield NATFHE - report good pickets not much activity on site
- University Of Lincoln NATFHE - report effective picketing throughout the day.
- University Of Luton NATFHE - are picketing all entrances - about 20 pickets. Quite quiet - people generally staying away, Chaplain gave them coffee! Luton News visited, taken photos.
- University Of Northumbria At Newcastle NATFHE - report approximately 150 members were picketing their institution and joining a march and rally with no teaching taking place.
- University Of Plymouth NATFHE - reports a successful day with good pickets, even managed to organise a pickett at Exmouth. Good support from students no sign of much activity on site.
- University Of Portsmouth NATFHE - report excellent joint NATFHE/AUT pickets covered all entrances magnificent support shown by members very few if any classes were held. Seven major teaching sites were picketed. Well-attended rally outside university house we received welcome support from UNISON colleagues and from students.
- University Of Sunderland NATFHE - very solid, pickets on every site. Few, if any classes were held. A lot of student support. Northern Echo was there. Photos were taken.
- Roehampton University - 20 pickets on main gate - all three sites covered. Hardly any students turned up. Manned pickets since 8 a.m. Mature student resigned from senate in support of our stance over pay docking - contacts with Guardian and THES.
- University Of The Arts London NATFHE - report the strike as being very solid with good picket lines art all sites and no teaching taking place. LCC picket - good turn out - been there since 7.00 a.m. University Of The Arts, Elephant & Castle - solid with 30 people on picket line which started at 7am. Most students have not gone in, in one department only 1 out of 400 students turned up today. All the other sites of the University of the Arts have had a good picket line. The picketing at Chelsea was successful. We had an unbroken picket line from 8.30 am until just after 6 pm.
- University Of Wales Institute Cardiff NATFHE - report that their institution is closed for the day. Good pickets and plenty of support from students. Several media interviews given.
- University Of The West Of England NATFHE - organised effective pickets and report that there is no sign of teaching taking place today.
- University Of Westminster NATFHE - are handing out "exam papers" on VC's pay to students and members of the public. All five sites all being effectively picketed. Most students supportive.
- University Of Wolverhampton - report good number of members involved in picket duty.
- Wimbledon School Of Art NATFHE - report most lectures cancelled and the college is very quiet.
