NATFHE has only recently begun to monitor for disability, so it is
very hard to know how many disabled members we have. If our membership
reflects the workforce as a whole, it is likely to be in the region of
19%.
NATFHE’s National Executive Council has a reserved seat for a Disabled Member. This is currently held by Sasha Callaghan.
Sasha is also the Chair of the Disabled Members Group of The Equality Advisory Council.
See Publications
for issues that might be of interest to you. In particular, ‘Enabling
not Disabling’ is a comprehensive guide to disability issues at work.
If you wish to have your name added to our Disabled Members Network, contact Equality Unit). You will then automatically receive a copy of Equality News at home (in your chosen format), and any information on issues of special interest to people with disabilities.
We would like to see the Disabled Members Network operating
locally. If you feel able to organise a gathering of NATFHE Disabled
Members in your area, contact Equality Unit).
The website you will find most useful for issues of concern to people with disabilities is that of the Disability Rights Commission.
They have just produced a Draft Code of Practice for Post-16
Education to implement the Special Educational Needs and Disability
Act. This is now out for formal consultation and NATFHE will be
responding.
The Government minister with responsibility for disability issues is Maria Eagle (Department of Work and Pensions).
