Since NATFHE began ethnic monitoring on its application forms, we now know that at least 3.8% of our members are black. However, there are likely to be many more who joined before we began ethnic monitoring.

NATFHE's National Executive Council has two reserved seats for Black members, one of which must be occupied by a woman. These seats are currently held by Jim Thakoordin and Naheed Arshad-Mather.

The Black Members Group of the Equality Advisory Council is currently chaired by Naheed Arshad-Mather.

The Black Members Network is currently quite active. An occasional newsletter purely for Black members is produced, and sent to all those on the network. Meetings of network members have been held in London, Birmingham and Bradford. If you wish to organise a meeting in your area, contact Equality Unit), and read the NATFHE guide Developing Black Members’ Networks

The website you will find most useful for issues of concern to Black people is that of the Commission for Racial Equality.

The CRE is working on a draft Code of Practice for Education, to implement the Race Relations (Amendment) Act in schools, colleges and universities. This is likely to be out soon for formal consultation, and NATFHE will be responding.

The Parliamentary Under Secretary with responsibility for race issues is Fiona Mactaggart (Home Office).
