NATFHE Says

Freedom Of Information action to expose VC pay hypocrisy

NATFHE is to use freedom of information laws to expose the double standards of university vice chancellors who it says are seeking to discredit the lecturers' ‘catch-up’ pay claim - despite awarding themselves average pay increases of 25.25% for the three-year period between 2001and 2004.

3652 senior staff in the HE sector earn more than the maximum £50,000 available to academics. A further 1573 earn more than £100,000.

NATFHE is asking its branches to submit Freedom of Information (FOI) requests to find out how many senior managers in each university have had major pay rises in recent years, or amounts similar to that being claimed now by staff.

NATFHE general secretary Paul Mackney said:

‘University staff rightly question the double standards of those who preach pay restraint to staff whilst awarding themselves 25% pay increases.

‘When the HE sector struggled for funding the employers awarded themselves bumper pay rises. When institutions are expecting significant new funds the same vice chancellors want to deny their staff the same rate of increase they enjoyed. Why?

‘This union's 23% claim is fully costed and publicly available. VCs and senior managers awarded themselves increases behind closed doors.’
