We've tried to make this website as accessible and straightforward to use as possible - but reading this page may help you to find your way around.

The site is optimised for Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser, version 4 or above, although it should work without problems in any browser. And to see it at its best, we recommend that you use Microsoft's 'Verdana' font, which is installed as a matter of course with current Windows and Mac operating systems.

Unlike the previous version, this site does not use frames at all; this makes it easier for us to point you directly to the information you're looking for. And we've introduced better navigation too: you can jump from main section to main section by using the coloured buttons at the top and bottom of each page. these take you to the following:

About NATFHE lists basic facts about the union, including the benefits of membership, and NATFHE's structure and history.

NATFHE Says sets out the union's policy and publicity, including our current campaigns, our publications and our parliamentary work.

Help and Advice from NATFHE will guide you if you have a problem or need the union's help.

NATFHE in Further Education and NATFHE in Higher Education contain pages of news and information for members working in, respectively, further education (including adult, landbased and prison education), and in 'new' universities and colleges of HE.

Contact NATFHE tells you how to get in touch with NATFHE's head office and Regional offices.

Branch Resources has guidelines, templates and other tools to help our branches build a stronger union.

NATFHE Links includes pages listing NATFHE branches' own websites, as well as a huge range of organisations, including other trade unions, funding and government bodies.

If you can't locate the information you're looking for using these links, there's a complete Site Index accessible throughout the site; click on the 'SITE INDEX AND SEARCH' at the top and bottom of each page; there's a search engine on this page as well. You can also return to the site 'home page' from anywhere in the site by clicking on 'HOME' that you'll find next to 'SITE INDEX AND SEARCH' on every page.

As you go deeper into the site, you'll notice that at the top of the text on each page there's a 'trail' that will take you back up through the section you're in: for example, at the top of a press release you'll see: NATFHE SAYS : PRESS OFFICE : PRESS RELEASES 2001. Clicking on 'PRESS RELEASES 2001' will take you to an index of all the press releases issued during 2001; clicking on 'PRESS OFFICE' takes you to the page introducing NATFHE's press officers; and clicking on 'NATFHE SAYS' will take you to the opening page of the main 'NATFHE Says' section.

On the right hand side of each page you'll either find a list of everything that's in a main section or, if you're about to enter a listing or a document that covers several pages of its own - an issue of The Lecturer, for example - there'll be an index to these pages. You can always go back up to the beginning of the main section by using the 'trail' at the top of the page's text.

Many NATFHE newsletters and policy statements can be downloaded from this site as Portable Document Format (pdf) files, which allow you to read and print a document as it was originally designed.

Newer browsers can open and display pdf files, but to use them most effectively you need Adobe's Acrobat Reader; this is often given away on the free CDs mounted on the covers of magazines, or with commercial software.

It can also be downloaded in versions designed for a variety of operating systems (including Windows, Mac and Unix) from Adobe's website.
